DO YOU THINK CONSERVATION HAS A PLACE IN THE 21st CENTURY?

With current trends globally of nations working towards industrialization at all cost and increasing agricultural productivity, construction of dams in conservation areas and giving out of wetlands to developers, encroaching in conservation areas . What happens to conservation? is it dying a natural death or there is room for change?

  1. i believe conservation is important in this century, in that we have a lot to gain from conservation than loosing. The modern values of conservation could come in the form of scientific value, commercial value, game value, Aesthetic value and ecological value. Development does not imply destroying the environment but optimizing the resources rather than maximizing. By embracing clean technologies and avoiding waste then a lot can be achieved. Conservation is very relevant.

  2. conservation is still very relevant to us today, in that we have a lot to gain from it rather than loosing. I believe co-existence is the key. Example many countries are really reaping from game related tourism, Eco- tourism among others.

  3. Basically, conservation still has a long way to go due to the current interference by political systems that are currently dominating various economies in the world. There will therefore be need for world environmental movements to come up with policies that put conservation at an independent point from political interference so as to boost world conservation. This will of course take some time and may be beyond the 21st century.

  5. Without conservation and the resolve of human/wildlife conflict, I'm afraid the face of the earth will change beyond our wildest fears. Balance in life, balance in nature, and a will to find a way must be the charge and directive to and of the human race.

  6. Conservation has been and always will be important to all generations. If through conservation we are seeking to preserve as much as we can and/or prevent major loss in our environment how can one ever not care about it? How could it ever not matter? It is a continuous and arduous work. Change needs to come from within us...it needs to come from everyone, not just a select few.

We all know this...so don't just sit back & let others take care of it. We are all involved as long as we are breathing.

    I say combine:
21st century technology + conservation mentallity = a brighter future for all living things

  7. Interesting post Sam, conservation seems to be overlooked today by many people. However, it should be definately looked into a lot more, as conservation should be a number one priority of all governements of all nations. It is a global issue, if we could all unite as one, perhaps some agreements, quotas could be established..
    Nice blog by the way..

  8. conservation is very important, example in the developing countries most people use herbs in the treatment of various ailments, example the muarubaini tree which treats nearly 40 ailments and has been discovered to contain compounds that can be harnessed in the treatment of cancer. Without conservation then this important medicinal will become extinct which will be a huge blow to the society at large.

  9. Conservation will have a future if all people could be aware of the wildlife with its importance and this will work well if the local communities are to be explained this importance through thorough education outreach by the stakeholders who already understand the problems being faced by our wildlife whereby some people think wildlife as vermin others as threats, pests and this could be solved if we could be having an alternative way to do with wildlife rather than these destructive attitudes and perceptions......

  10. we live in modern times, the "Technology" era, most of our generation live with technology, computer games and movies. Some of our children and ourselves dont even know how a goat looks like. we can identify an animal in a movie but cant in real life.
Its time to spearhead the change from reliance on changing times to the nature way of life, instead of movies all through we visit parks, instead of soap operas and football we also view National Geographic Channels, instead of living on processed foods we also eat direct farm products like sugarcane. Its time we went back to our roots, the nature way, only then will we be able to save the environment because we understand it better. U CAN ONLY SAVE WHAT YOU UNDERSTAND, SPEARHEAD UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENVIRONMENT FIRST BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE.............

  11. As of September 2010, the unemployment level among the youth in Kenya stood at 65%, which is among the highest in the world. I believe through conservation related activities like the establishment of community based conservation among other initiatives, conservation can create employment and reduce the unemployment levels to certain degree. So conservation remains to be very relevant in the 21st century.

  16. conservation is very important especially to the patrol communities. This is because most of the rangelands are found here. Most of the wildlife is found here and the rangelands are used as grazing lands for livestock, without conservation then the pastrolists and wildlife will suffer.

  17. conservation is important, because our rivers would dry up because without supporting the water catchment areas there will be no rains.

  18. of course it has a place because many nations worldwide are trying to ensure that their natural resources are not destroyed by putting aside conservation areas such as national parks and reserves in which endangered species are conserved. In other regions conservation courses have been incorporated in the education system.

  19. if conservation topics can be well integrated in our education syllabuses, the 21st century would survive extinction of nature.

  23. Conservation is critical in this period where we are now experiencing an increase in human population at the expense of declining world flora and fauna. As we forge ahead towards industrialization, we should bear in mind the protection, and wise use of resources of resources to meet our current needs and also not putting into jeopardy the future generation to also meet their needs. We need to strike a balance between development and conservation, thus adopt sustainable conservation.

  24. conservation and life is no difference and hence vital in any century in lifetime.the world in general has formed several organisotions to manage different resources impying that its necessary.all generations should think and come up with best methods of conservation to avoid extinction of the remaining species of flora and fauna.
